ChatGPT - Getting Started

Getting started with ChatGPT is straightforward. You can access ChatGPT through the OpenAI platform. This chapter will guide you step-by-step on how to create an OpenAI account and begin your journey with ChatGPT.

If you’re already an OpenAI registered user and have used ChatGPT before, you can skip this section and move to the next. Otherwise, follow these instructions to create your account:

  1. Visit the official OpenAI website: Navigate to https://openai.com in your web browser.

  2. Locate ChatGPT: On the homepage, look for a prominent link or button like ‘Try ChatGPT’ or ‘ChatGPT’ in the navigation menu. Clicking this will usually take you to the ChatGPT-specific page.

  3. Sign Up: You’ll typically land on a page (e.g., chat.openai.com) with options to ‘Log in’ or ‘Sign up’. Click on ‘Sign up’.

  4. Create Account: You can create an account using your email address and a password. Alternatively, OpenAI often provides options to sign up using your existing Google, Microsoft, or Apple account for a quicker process. Follow the on-screen prompts, which may include email verification and providing some basic information like your name and birthdate.

  5. Agree to Terms: Review and agree to OpenAI’s terms of use and privacy policy. You may also need to complete a phone number verification step for security purposes.

Congratulations! Once your account is set up and you’re logged in, you’ll be greeted by the ChatGPT interface. This interface typically features a prominent input box at the bottom of the screen where you can type your messages or ‘prompts’.

To start, simply type your question or request into the input box (e.g., “Explain quantum computing in simple terms”) and press Enter or click the send button (often an arrow icon). ChatGPT will then process your prompt and generate a response. You can also explore example prompts often provided on the initial screen to get ideas.

ChatGPT is also available as mobile apps for both Android (Google Play Store) and iOS (Apple App Store), allowing you to use it on your smartphones and tablets.

ChatGPT helps you keep your conversations organized by automatically managing them in separate threads or ‘chats’. When you start a new conversation by sending an initial prompt, ChatGPT typically creates a new chat session. This new chat will appear in a sidebar, usually on the left side of the screen.

ChatGPT often automatically assigns a title to the chat based on the initial topic of your conversation. You can usually rename these chats for better organization by clicking on an edit icon or options menu associated with each chat title in the sidebar.

You can start a new chat at any time (often by clicking a ‘New chat’ button, typically a plus icon or similar, at the top of the sidebar). This allows you to discuss different topics without mixing them up. You can easily switch between past conversations by clicking on their titles in the sidebar. This is useful if you want to revisit a topic or continue a discussion you started previously.

For instance, if you had a conversation about ‘Machine Learning Fundamentals’ yesterday, you can find that chat in your history, click on it, and ChatGPT will load the previous messages. It will remember the context of that specific conversation, allowing you to ask follow-up questions without restating everything. For example, if you previously asked “What is supervised learning?” and received an answer, you could then ask “Can you give me an example?” and ChatGPT would understand you’re still talking about supervised learning within that chat.

This chat organization makes it convenient to manage multiple topics and refer back to past interactions efficiently, ensuring context is maintained within each individual chat thread.
