SEO - Web Site Domain

Your domain name is your website’s address on the internet and a core part of your online brand identity. While choosing a domain name, consider its impact on branding, memorability, and user perception.

In the past, having exact match keywords in your domain name (Exact Match Domains or EMDs) provided a significant SEO boost. However, search engines like Google have devalued this factor considerably to combat low-quality EMD sites.

While including relevant keywords can still offer a minor contextual clue or improve user recognition, it’s far less important than factors like content quality, backlinks, and user experience. Do not sacrifice brandability or memorability just to include keywords.

  • Brandability: Does the name sound like a brand? Is it unique and memorable?
  • Memorability & Pronunciation: Is it easy for people to remember, say, and type?
  • Length: Shorter domains are generally easier to remember and type.
  • Simplicity: Avoid hyphens (can be associated with spam, harder to say) and numbers if possible, as they can cause confusion.
  • Target Audience Relevance: Does the name resonate with your intended audience?
  • Top-Level Domain (TLD): .com is the most recognized and often preferred TLD globally. Country-specific TLDs (e.g., .co.uk, .ca) are suitable if your target audience is primarily within that country. Other TLDs (e.g., .net, .org, .io, .ai) can also be relevant depending on your niche.
  • Uniqueness & Availability: Check if the name and corresponding social media handles are available. Avoid names that are too similar to existing brands to prevent confusion or potential trademark issues.
  • Trademark Check: Perform a trademark search to ensure you’re not infringing on existing rights.

Think long-term. Choose a name that allows your business or website to grow and potentially expand its scope.

  • Domain Age: While older domains might have a slight edge if they have a clean history and established authority, domain age itself is not a major ranking factor. A new domain can rank perfectly well.
  • Domain History: Check the history of a previously owned domain using tools like the Wayback Machine (archive.org) to ensure it wasn’t used for spammy activities, which could negatively impact its reputation.

Before finalizing your domain:

  • Define your brand identity and target audience.
  • Brainstorm multiple options, including creative and brandable names.
  • Keep it short, simple, memorable, and easy to spell.
  • Prioritize .com if targeting a global audience, or a relevant ccTLD for local focus.
  • Check availability (domain, social media handles).
  • Perform a trademark search.
  • Get feedback from others on memorability and relevance.
  • Choose a name that supports your long-term vision.
