Theano - Introduction
Introduction to Modern Deep Learning Frameworks
Section titled “Introduction to Modern Deep Learning Frameworks”Developing Machine Learning (ML) and especially Deep Learning (DL) models involves intensive numerical computations. Training neural networks, for example, requires vast amounts of arithmetic operations, particularly on large multi-dimensional arrays (tensors).
Historically, libraries like Theano pioneered solutions to accelerate these computations. Theano allowed users to define mathematical expressions symbolically, optimized these expressions, and compiled them for efficient execution on both CPUs and GPUs. It played a significant role in the early days of deep learning research.
However, the landscape has evolved. While Theano is no longer actively developed or recommended for new projects, its core ideas laid the groundwork for modern deep learning frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow. These contemporary libraries offer more flexibility, usability, and performance.
Why Modern Frameworks?
Section titled “Why Modern Frameworks?”Modern frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow provide several key advantages:
These features enable researchers and engineers to rapidly develop, train, and deploy state-of-the-art deep learning models much more efficiently than was possible with earlier tools or manual implementations.
This tutorial will explore the fundamental concepts behind efficient deep learning computation, using PyTorch to illustrate how these ideas are implemented in a modern context. While we acknowledge Theano’s historical importance, our focus will be on current best practices.
